A stylish new Japanese restaurant has just opened on Grindlay Street in the centre of Edinburgh. A new venture from the people behind the excellent but tiny Sushiya at Haymarket. The attention to detail in the interior design of Kanpai is outstanding and if the food is as delicious as it is at Sushiya then this promises to be my new favourite restaurant. Here are a couple of images of the new restaurant, shot for i-on Edinburgh Magazine.

I photographed Nobles on Constitution Street in Leith this week for i-on Magazine. It's my local, my home from home and most favourite bar in town. If you've never been, you really should go. They do fantastic food, great booze, live music and even host a highly competitive quiz night. It's a great place for brunch and they are brilliant with kids, but equally brilliant at mother's ruin, or even ruining mother. It's a Victorian bar, tastefully re-vamped, with lots of signs of the local history and culture, particularly the stunning stained glass windows. Check it out, and feel free to buy me a gin while you're there!

Inspirational Women

This week I have been working on a magazine feature about inspirational women, and the two women featured here really are an inspiration. Sister Aelred runs the Homeless Project at St Catharine's Convent in Edinburgh and Lynne McNicoll who, after years of working with larger teenage cancer charities, has set up her own charity It's Good to Give with the aim of supporting young people in the East of Scotland with cancer as well as their families.

One of the good things about all this snow, is that I'm getting the opportunity to update my blog.
I worked at Welch Fishmongers in Newhaven a few weeks ago. If you love seafood, you should definitely pay them a visit. This family run business stocks a wide range of delicious seafood and what's more, the helpful and knowledgeable staff, including three generations of the Welch family are happy to give you cooking tips and share their favourite recipes with you.

I spent a lovely day in the studio on Tuesday with my very dear friend and long-time partner in crime, Mairi Gordon. Mairi is an excellent make-up artist and has recently returned to her native Edinburgh after a very long time away. It sounds like she was in prison - she wasn't! She has lived and worked in almost every corner of the world, at some points with me, so I am delighted to have her back! We worked with two gorgeous models from the Stolen Model Agency, Kate and Willa - thanks to them both for being so brilliant. I've still to edit the images, but couldn't resist posting a couple, more to follow.....

I've been working with Equator in Glasgow to produce a series of images for the new Ayr Racecourse and Hotel website. I went along on the recent Ladies Day to photograph the Hotel and racecourse set up for not only a race day, but also a wedding. I'm hoping to go back soon to get some more images.

I've been spending a lot of time in bars recently. Admittedly, this is nothing new, however, this time it's on a strictly professional basis. First up was Amicus Apple on Frederick Street in Edinburgh, pictured below.

I went up to Aberdeen this week to photograph the recently refurbished Paramount bar in the City Centre. It has had a dramatic facelift and it's grand re-opening is this week. Have a look if you're in the Granite City. Images are below:

Hopetoun Cottages

Before heading off to Arles last week for the photography festival, I spent a day on the idyllic grounds of the Hopetoun House Estate, photographing the two newly refurbished cottages that they have available for holiday rental. If you've never been to Hopetoun House, it's well worth a visit. It's hard to believe that the tranquil setting is just a stone's throw from Edinburgh.

I had a lot of fun last week at the fantastic new boutique Miss Dixiebelle, located in Bruntsfield Place in Edinburgh. Gorgeous burlesque stars Missy Malone and Leyla Rose were on hand to model some of their wares and the shoot was styled by Leigh Miller. We had a great time and I'm sure many of the local passers-by enjoyed an eye-full too!

Cafe Saint Honore

Following a slightly extended trip to Kenya (images to follow), thanks to the volcanic ash, I'm back to work on lots of interesting jobs. First up was a lovely day spent at Cafe Saint Honore on Thistle Street Lane, photographing some of the delicious food. Head Chef, Neil Forbes explained to me the philosophy behind their cooking. They are passionate about sourcing local, sustainable produce and the gastronomic enthusiasm can is clearly evident in the food. Neil is also responsible for The Atrium and Blue restaurants, and all three are definitely worth a visit.

Went down the coast last weekend to stay with our lovely friend Vixy Rae (of Oddities fame) in her amazing cottage in East Lothian. The place is full of decades worth of beach-found treasure, old books and jigsaws. It rained a lot but we managed to fill our time with wine, chat, connect four and a couple of snaps.

This is my first ever post on my first ever blog and it's a bit like marking the first page of a new sketch book or school jotter and I'm not quite sure what to say. The intention of this blog is to keep anyone who might be interested updated with new work.

This image was shot a while ago on a trip to Las Vegas with fellow photographer Alex Hill (check him out: www.alexhillphotographer.com).
